There is no requirement that a husband has to pay his wife alimony in the event of a divorce. Whether you will be required to pay alimony depends on a number of factors. There are two main forms of alimony: lifetime and rehabilitative.
In today's society, alimony is seldom awarded for a recipient's lifetime. Rehabilitative alimony is awarded for a specific period of time and is intended to assist and allow the wife to get to a place where she is no longer dependent upon you for financial support. It is awarded at the discretion of the judge and is not mandatory in cases. A judge will look at the specific facts of your case to determine whether alimony is warranted and, if so, for what period of time. Alimony should always be appropriate to the parties' needs and ability to pay.
